The Small Steps team arrived in two parts for this project; myself straight from the projects in Cambodia and from Australia volunteer, Jen and photographer Tom bringing more aid from the Australian clothing drive. Jen managed to put together a clothing drive in just three weeks, not only getting family and friends to donate but some companies as well, including CK Children’s Clothing, Fussy Feet Shoes and Kmart. Thank you, once again Australia! Thanks to the help of Brent Fairheart…

Siem Reap Dump, Cambodia

Posted by | Amy's Blog | No Comments

In November 2011 The Small Steps Project volunteers visited the Siem Reap rubbish dump and were horrified at what they found so they delivered an aid distribution project. Back in the UK we researched what was happening on the dump and who was helping and we found out about a man called Sophal Chor who was also delivering emergency aid as well as a project called the Anlong Pi/Kaliyan Mith project which is part of NGO, Friends International. We contacted…

Steps off Dumps and into Education

Small Steps Project (SSP) returned to Cambodia to revisit the dump in Sihanoukville where we delivered an aid distribution project in 2010 and in Siem Reap in 2011. This year we wanted to work on our second step, which is, after distributing aid, assisting children off the dumps and into education. There are two ways this can be done: partnering with already existing projects and supporting them so that they are able to care for the dump children or…

Sareka House, Sihanoukville Dump Shelter

Posted by | Amy's Blog | No Comments

We have been looking for a shelter or project for the children of the dump community at Sihanoukville since our last visit and finally we found Sareka House.  We were keen to support a project that was a permanent presence in the lives of the community we had previously helped. However, due to the change in location of the dump, it meant that the shelter was now out of walking distance for the children at the dump. We thought perhaps…

Sihanoukville Rubbish Dump Revisit

Posted by | Amy's Blog | No Comments

In 2010 SSP distributed an aid project to approximately 40 families on the Sihanoukville dump in Cambodia consisting of over 150 people, half of which were children. This is the documentary we made about our first project there; ‘Small Steps: Sihanoukville.’ In the film we discovered that many of the children over 6 years old are attending a project called Sareka House and school. However there had been some major changes to the Sihanoukville dump since we were last there – it…

CHINANDEGA DUMP, NORTHERN NICARAGUA

Posted by | Amy's Blog | No Comments

As the temperatures soared into the forties in Nicaragua and the volunteers had returned to Europe, we headed to northern Nicaragua to start editing the hours and hours of footage we had filmed during the dump projects in Managua and Granada. We arrived in Jiquilillo and within moments of getting off the back of the truck we met the owner of the place where we were staying, Donald ‘Monty’ Montgomery. Before we had even put down our equipment Monty was…
