NICARAGUA – Granada

This dump project is no longer active

La Joya dump

La Joya (The Jewel) Dumpsite on the outskirts of Granada. It is situated 4km from the picturesque tourist hotspot and is believed to cover 3km². Worryingly, it is thought to be sited on top of the town’s natural aquifer system. Although families do not live on the dump, there is a large community around the edge who scavenge daily with numbers reaching up to 200. Half of which are children.

Small Steps Project delivered a Phase 1 Shoe Distribution so that the children could have shoes to enable them to attend school. We also provided school supplies for the children as well as distributing clothes, wellington boots, mosquito nets and hygiene kits for everyone on the dump.
