This Spring we went to visit our off site nursery-Wonderland for 3 to 7-year-old children from Pata Rat dump in Cluj, Romania, as well as our onsite medical and mother & baby project on the dump site.
We were so happy to see that the children and families were really enjoying the nursery. It has taken over 3 years but it is clear that the actions and activities proposed and instigated by Small Steps Project and NGO Fundatia Dezvoltarea Popoarelor are greatly welcomed by the community, who were previously skeptical about allowing their small children off the dump by themselves.
Besides the difficulties that we encounter with the local Municipality every day: constantly denying us and our beneficiaries access to water, refusing to provide bins, waste removal or the removal of dead animals, as well as not adequately providing their most vulnerable members of society with the support they need with the vast sums of EU funding they receive. We are satisfied that we have created and set up a project that provides and alternative for the children of the Roma community, who continue to fight for their human rights, and we hope that the Municipality will start to take responsibility for them in the near future.
